TraceTracker announces Fish Pass

A new online portal offers an alternative for seafood companies struggling under the EU's new IUU regulation.

Oslo, 3. March 2010–In response to a new EU law concerning illegal fishing, TraceTracker AS is announcing a new solution which reduces the burden of compliance for supply chain partners and authorities. Importers and exporters faced with increasing paperwork can streamline compliance through an online portal that manages the required documentation and records.

The new law (1005/2008) which came in force on January 1, 2010 prohibits illegal, unregulated and undocumented (IUU) fish products from entering the EU.  It places the burden of proof on exporters who must use catch certificates to document the source and legality of every seafood product. For large seafood exporters and importers, the new law can translate into hundreds of hours of administrative time.

TraceTracker’s solution, Fish Pass, relieves the burden of compliance by streamlining documentation management. It enables supply chain partners to exchange, evaluate, approve and archive required documentation and records through a common, online portal.  It can be implemented between single company and its immediate suppliers or along entire supply chains.  In addition, authorities on both sides of the EU border can make use of the Fish Pass to increase their effectiveness.

The solution is based on electronic product traceability principles and meets all relevant industry standards such as GS1, EPCIS and others.  It integrates with IT systems within individual companies and catch certificate databases in flag state countries, linking catch information from every step in the supply chain.

“Electronic documentation is clearly the way of the future for IUU compliance,” explained Geir Myrold, Head of the Nordic Region at TraceTracker.  “Streamlining documentation means avoiding delays, reducing administrative time and costs. It can also enable importers to achieve a special Approved Economic Operator (APEO) status from the EU which translates into reduced work on their part. In the case of inquiries from authorities, the documentation and supply chain information for specific products are available instantly.”
